A young woman came to me to ask why her mom appeared to her in a dream. Her mom wasn’t alive anymore and had been a card reader in her lifetime, as well.
“Did you feel it was a good dream?” I asked.
“I’m not sure, but I could really feel her presence in the room with me,” she said, “and that’s why I came to you. She seemed OK, but it made quite an impression on me.”
“Did she say anything to you?” I asked.
“All I remember is she was telling me that I would have two kids,” she said.
“Oh, that’s so cool,” I said.” Do you want to have kids?”
“Sure,” she said, “but I’m really worried how all these guys I meet don’t want to commit. I don’t want my kids not to have a father.”
“Alright”, I said. “Let’s ask the cards what this dream could mean.”
I shuffled my Marseille Tarot (22 trumps only) and pulled out three cards: the Devil (reversed); Force; the Hermit.

“OK,” I said, after looking at the cards for a while. “It looks like you are Force, opening the lion’s mouth with your bare hands, wanting something to happen. The reason I think so is that the Hermit is walking towards you, peering at you with his lantern. So he’s your visitor, your mom, trying to show you something clearly. You may have an idea or a goal in your head, and it’s behind all this, but you may not be seeing it clearly for what it is, just like the Force card.”
“All there is to see is that Devil card behind me…”, she said.
“Exactly. And somehow it came out reversed, even though I hadn’t intended to use reversed cards for this reading. So let’s do what I often do when a card is reversed.” I pulled another card and placed it right side up above the Devil card to see what was needed to “rectify” the situation.*
The Sun card came up. It was so perfect that I had to laugh.

“This is not necessarily a prediction dream,” I said. “Your mom (Hermit) visited you (Force) in your dream to tell you not to “force” the issue of your kids having a father. If it happens, it happens. Better two happy children playing in the sun than being stuck with one big devil and two little imps.”
*(This is a method I learned from students of Philippe Camoin.)
